Filtration and pressure control solve different problems
A filter removes debris; a pressure regulator controls pressure. Many irrigation systems need both, but they are not interchangeable.
1. Decide what needs protecting
2. Choose the filtration approach
- Screen filters: a straightforward option where debris is expected and the chosen size suits the system.
- Disc filters: a useful choice for finer irrigation protection and water containing organic or fine material.
- Strainers and larger filtration: use where the pipework or equipment needs protection from larger debris.
The filter must be sized for the flow you actually expect. A small filter on a larger flow can restrict the system; too coarse a filter can leave emitters unprotected.
Pressure regulator: this limits pressure for downstream equipment. It does not remove debris, cure poor pump sizing or make undersized pipe deliver more water.
3. When do you need both?
- Dripline or micro irrigation: normally plan for filtration and suitable pressure control.
- Tank, pond or borehole water: consider likely sediment and debris before sensitive components.
- Sprinkler mains: size filtration around the system flow; only add pressure regulation where the product and design call for it.
4. Check before ordering
Know the water source, expected debris, pipe size, flow, thread type and the pressure required by the downstream equipment. Then confirm where the filter will be installed and how it will be cleaned or maintained.
