Why Will My Pump Not Prime or Lose Prime?

A practical guide to a pump that runs but will not draw water
This guide is for surface pumps and self-priming pumps. A submersible pump sits in the water, so it does not normally have a suction-side priming problem.
1. Check safely first
Do not run a pump dry for longer than its manufacturer permits. Isolate the electrical supply before opening strainers, loosening fittings or working on the pump. Never loosen a connection while the system is pressurised.
Before taking anything apart, confirm that there is water available at the source and that any isolation valves are open. If the pump motor hums, trips, overheats, leaks heavily or has damaged wiring, stop and get the fault assessed rather than continuing to restart it.
2. What is the pump actually doing?
- It has never drawn water after installation: the pump casing may not have been filled as required, the suction pipe may contain air, or the pump may not be suitable for the lift or installation.
- It worked, then lost prime after being switched off: water is often draining back through the suction line or a small air leak is allowing the prime to break.
- It runs but the flow has reduced: check the water level, a blocked strainer or filter, a partially closed valve, crushed hose and restrictions in the pipework.
- It runs intermittently: consider a changing water level, air entering the suction side, control issues or dry-run protection operating.
3. The common causes to work through
Water source and lift
A surface pump can only lift water within the limit set by its manufacturer. As the source level falls, the vertical lift increases. Long, narrow suction runs, poor fittings and restrictions make that job harder. Do not assume a larger motor will cure a poor suction arrangement.
Air leaks on the suction side
Air can enter through a loose threaded adaptor, damaged seal, cracked hose, worn union or a joint that only leaks when the pump is stopped. Unlike a pressure-side leak, it may not leave a visible puddle. Check every connection between the water source and pump inlet.
Blocked or unsuitable intake
A blocked strainer, debris around a foot valve, a hose sitting in silt, or a floating intake drawing air can all reduce or stop flow. Keep the inlet clear of the bottom and confirm that it remains under water at the lowest expected water level.
Pump casing not filled correctly
Many surface pumps need the pump casing and, in some arrangements, the suction line filled with water before first use. Follow the pump manufacturer’s priming instructions. Do not assume every pump is self-priming or that every self-priming pump can start with an empty, long suction line.
4. What may help — after the fault is identified
- Damaged hose or poor connection: replace the unsuitable section and use fittings that match the hose and pump connection.
- Water draining back: inspect or replace the appropriate foot valve or non-return valve; check orientation and sealing.
- Debris reaching the pump: use suitable intake protection or filtration for the water source and expected flow.
- Excessive lift or a difficult water source: review whether a submersible pump, different pump position or a redesigned system is more suitable.

Send a photograph of the pump and suction setup, the vertical distance from water level to pump, hose or pipe size, approximate run length, water source and any model number. That gives us the information needed to identify whether this is a priming, pipework or pump-selection issue.
