Why Is My Dripline Not Watering Evenly?

Find the cause before replacing the dripline
Uneven watering is usually a layout, pressure, filtration or blockage issue. The affected area gives a strong clue to where to start looking.
1. Read the pattern of the problem
- The whole zone is weak: check the water supply, filter, pressure regulator, valve and run time before changing the dripline.
- The first part is wet but the far end is dry: look for excessive run length, too many emitters on one zone, undersized supply pipe or low pressure at the start of the line.
- One section is dry: inspect for a kink, crushed pipe, closed valve, damaged fitting or local blockage.
- Some emitters wet but others do not: check for debris, incorrect fittings, line damage and whether the pipe was installed in the correct direction where applicable.
2. Check the simple causes first
Water source, filter and pressure
Confirm the water supply is available while the zone is running. Clean the filter as required by its manufacturer and check that any pressure regulator is suitable for the selected dripline. A regulator cannot create pressure that is not available upstream, and a filter that is too small or blocked can restrict the whole zone.
Pipe layout and flow demand
Every line needs enough flow and pressure along its full length. Long runs, steep changes in level, many emitters, too many branches and an undersized supply pipe can leave the furthest area short of water. Do not add more dripline to a zone until the original layout is working evenly.
Fittings and damage
16 mm and 17 mm are not automatically interchangeable across brands. A fitting that looks close may pinch, leak or restrict the line. Check for kinks, accidental punctures, crushed sections and loose or mismatched connections.
3. What may help — once the cause is known
- Blocked filter or debris: clean or replace the appropriate filter element and flush the line before assuming emitters have failed.
- Insufficient pressure or flow: review the zone size, supply pipe and pump or water-source duty.
- Local pipe damage: replace the damaged section using fittings matched to the exact line.
- Incorrect line for the installation: choose a purpose-suitable surface or subsurface dripline rather than trying to make an unsuitable line work.
Before you ask for help
Send a sketch or photograph of the zone, dripline brand and size, water source, total run length, number of branches, filter and pressure regulator details. A short video of the system running is often useful too.
